Have iPhone 4S but can't update iOS 6?

When I go to settings, general, software update… Download and install button is not highlighted so I can't download it. A number one is attached to the setting app saying I have to update my software but can't push the "download and install" what to do?

I text bombed my friend from my iPhone and now the message app either crashes or is just a blank screen. Same on my iPad. Does anyone know how to fix this. Already tried reset and hard reset neither worked.
